A Word From the Author:
"You’ll find more technique instruction in Chained than in any other book on this subject. Through more than 1,000 hours of teaching, I’ve learned the common stumbling blocks and questions students have. I’ve included the tips and tricks I’ve acquired over the years to help you save time and avoid frustration. I’ll help you navigate the confusing world of ring sizes with conversions between metric and imperial measurements. I can’t completely tear down the mathematical barriers surrounding chain mail, but I’ve tried to at least provide ladders and loopholes to those needing them." — Rebeca Mojica

How Jump Rings Are Made
Chain mail is composed of tiny metal circles called jump rings. A jump ring is made by taking a length of wire and wrapping it around a rod, known as a mandrel, to make a coil. In metalsmithing classes, students generally do this by hand. Serious chain mail weavers will use an electric setup, either attaching the mandrel to a power screwdriver or drill, or by using jump ring making tools.

Once a coil is made, it is then cut with wire cutters or with a saw. Rings that are cut with wire cutters are often referred to as "pinch-cut" rings, since the ends of the rings are squeezed until they break, thereby creating points on the ends of the ring. Saw-cut rings are preferable for jewelry, as the saw creates a perfect line, known as a kerf, through the metal. This line allows you to close the ring seamlessly.

Some people find it satisfying to create jump rings and have control over the entire chain mail process. There is specific information in other books, and notably on the Internet, on how to make your own jump rings. The organization M.A.I.L. ( mentioned on the previous page is an excellent resource for this type of information. If you suspect you’re one of those people who would love making your own rings, I encourage you to seek out this information and give it a go!

Many people prefer to be "weavers rather than spinners" and simply purchase pre-made jump rings. A decade ago it was difficult to find reliable sources for jump rings, but as chain mail has grown in popularity, many companies have started to offer chain mail supplies (see Recommended Suppliers and Resources on page 142).

Throughout this book, I’ll refer to a few measurements with regard to jump rings. The inner diameter and the wire diameter are most important, and we’ll discuss these concepts on pages 16&mdsh;17.
