- Nice Painting Demo, Misleading Title Review by Carole
From the title and description, I expected to hear this artist share expertise on how value, color, and other elements can be used to create a desired mood and atmosphere in a painting. That's not what this video covers.
Instead, the first 50 minutes was of the artist painting an evening beach scene from a reference photo. Comments were basically focused on process and brushwork as well as identifying which colors were being mixed. Color choices seemed driven by the reference photo and very little to no advice was offered in terms of how different color choices could impact the mood/atmosphere of a painting. The painting Ms. Lewis produced was attractive and effective but she missed an opportunity to provide helpful analytical information that should have started with an assessment of the photograph for mood/atmosphere and related those to choices about value, color, shapes, and edges.
The final 12 minutes was devoted very rudimentary explanations of the importance of value, color, shapes, and edges. The examples offered were not particularly enlightening. I felt this "after the fact" segment was at best unhelpful and at worst confusing to a beginning painter.
This video seems aimed at beginning artists working in oils yet it missed the mark in my opinion. Coming from a training development background, my thought is that while it can be instructive watching an accomplished artist like Ms. Lewis paint, beginners need a lot more introductory info up front before they can really get anything out of watching a painting session. And in general, they need to know more about WHY an artist makes certain choices than WHAT the artist is doing (which is observable anyway).
There would have been more instructional value for beginners if the value/color/shape/edge discussion had come first and had been expanded with better examples that were specifically tied to HOW to establish a specific mood/atmosphere in a painting--somber, dark, cheerful, light, warm, cool, whatever. That could have been followed by a segment showing the artist producing a painting from start to finish during which her choices in connection with those four elements were discussed/explained--especially if she chose to deviate from the reference photo and explained why. Quick studies of the same scene with difference choices to create different moods/atmosphere would have been even more valuable.
So long story short, I found the video worth watching but feel that beginning artists may find it falls short in helping them make choices to achieve a desired mood/atmosphere in their work. Very possibly, a title change would be appropriate because I feel the current title and description are somewhat misleading.
