Ampersand Pastelboard
Ampersand Pastelboard has a very nice, even texture. The stiff board can be easily transported without any other support. Ampersand comes in four colors, including white, which can be toned (see page 16). Many layers of pastel may be used, which allows for a vast range of artistic styles from loose and textural to very detailed and realistic. I prefer the green for my portraits, so I can skip the toning stage. This surface is museum quality and pH neutral.

This is a wonderful surface for painting on, but it’s at the higher end of the price scale. Although the board support can be a benefit, it can also be a problem. Sometimes I find that a painting is just not working and decide that cropping would improve the composition. However, this board is not suited for cropping. While an electric saw may work for cropping an oil or acrylic painting, it would make pastel dance all over!
