Many of our earliest and strongest memories are tactile—the satin edge of a baby blanket or the nubbiness of a worn teddy bear. As we grew older, our sense of touch became more sophisticated, and we developed a visual appreciation of texture as well. Playing on viewers' natural attraction to texture, we can help them relate more personally to our paintings. And fortunately for us, there are lots of ways to create compelling textural effects.
