Pen-and-ink art consists of a series of marks set down on the paper to create a pleasing composition. There are basically two types of marks that can be applied to the paper: dots or lines. Both dots and lines can be varied in size, volume and arrangement. Lines also can be varied in form. By changing the size, volume and arrangements of the marks — and in the case of lines, their form — you can create the appearance of texture.
There are seven distinct texturing techniques: contour lines, parallel lines, crosshatching, dots or stippling, scribble lines, wavy grain lines and crisscross lines. Each of these texture groups and their many variations will be dealt with separately in this chapter. In addition, there is the link drawing techniques that is a form of scribble line, but is distinct in that it deals mostly with the outline of shapes rather than inner contours and shading.
