A Word From the Author:
Throughout the book I have included exercises that will help you internalize this material. I have also included selections from my own personal journals. These journal entries include a range of ideas. I have contemplated and struggled with during my painting career. Keeping a journal has helped me mature as a person and as an artist.I hope this book will help you to grow as a painter. I have been very fortunate to live my life in art, and I feel it is important to share this knowledge and to pass it on. The more knowledge you gain, the more y ou immerse yourself in painting, the more opportunities there will be to let go and experience those moments that I mention above. We live for those moments!"- — Stephen Quiller

My standard universal palette contains twelve colors: the three primary colors (yellow, red, and blue), the three secondary colors (orange, violet, and green), and the six intermediate colors (yellow-oragnge, red-orange, red-violet, blue-violet, blue-green, and yellow-green). I call this a painterly palette because it has a lot of mineral inorganic colors and some synthetic organic colors, which allows the artist to life and stain as well as push the paint around. The palette does include cadmium paints, even though they are toxic if inhaled or ingested. (If you have an aversion to working with these paints, turn to page 24 for a discussion about nontoxic colors that can be used as substitutes). All of these colors have a #1 light-fast rating, which ensures that with proper care and framing the artwork will last. Every color imaginable can be created by mixing these twelve colors, so if you master this palette, you will be able to interpret subjects as diverse as the high mountains of Colorado, the tropical regions of Hawaii, and the lush and colorful areas of the Mediterranean.
